Key Takeaways

  • •India's electric vehicle sales surged 83.6% in fiscal year 2026
  • •Cab fleet operators drive EV adoption, absorbing high upfront costs
  • •Ride-hailing market projected to reach $11.06 billion by 2033
  • •Uber invests in expanding electric and premium offerings in India

India's electric passenger vehicle sales surged by 83.6% in the fiscal year 2026, reaching 1,99,923 units, according to data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations. This remarkable growth reflects a broader trend in the country's transportation sector, where cab fleet operators are increasingly turning to electric vehicles (EVs) to meet rising demand.

In 2026, funding for India's cab fleet operators nearly doubled, with companies securing at least $37.89 million, a significant jump from the $20 million recorded in 2025. This influx of capital is driven by the growing demand for electric, premium, and corporate transport services. Companies such as Lithium Urban Technologies, Carrum Mobility, Refex Mobility, Everest Fleet, LetzRyd, and TrEV are at the forefront of this shift.

Fleet operators are playing a crucial role in the expansion of electric and premium ride categories. The high upfront costs associated with EVs often deter individual drivers, but fleet companies are stepping in to absorb these expenses and manage the vehicles. This shift is part of a broader trend where consumers are increasingly viewing cars as a service rather than a product, a partner at EY-Parthenon India.

The demand for premium vehicles is also on the rise, particularly among corporate and personal-use customers. Karan Jain, founder of Carrum Mobility, noted that the return to office work and congested streets have fueled the need for premium services like Uber Black, which now constitutes about 20% of Carrum's fleet.

Refex Mobility has capitalized on the expansion of global capability centers (GCCs) in India, which require reliable transportation for their large workforces. The company reported crossing ₹100 crore in revenue for FY26, highlighting the importance of compliant and dependable transport for executive-class employees.

The ride-hailing market in India generated $2.51 billion in revenue in 2025 and is projected to reach $11.06 billion by 2033, according to Grand View Research. This growth underscores the strategic importance of vehicle supply, prompting ride-hailing platforms to invest actively in fleet operators.

Uber has been particularly active in this space, illustrating its commitment to expanding its electric and premium offerings. The company has partnered with various fleet operators to deploy EVs across major cities. These moves highlight Uber's focus on expanding its electric and premium offerings.

Other investors are also backing fleet operators. In June, JSW Green Mobility announced an investment in Lithium Urban Technologies to support the expansion of EV fleets and infrastructure. Parth Jindal of JSW Group emphasized the structural transformation in the mobility landscape driven by urbanization, electrification, and digital commerce.

Strategic investors, including ride-hailing platforms and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), are driving investment in the sector. Kunal Khattar, founder of AdvantEdge, noted that fleet operators bridge the gap for platforms like Uber, which aim to scale EV adoption but face reluctance from individual drivers due to concerns about residual value and overall economics.

Uber has set a global target for 100% of its rides to be in zero-emission vehicles, public transit, or micro-mobility by 2040, reaffirming this commitment for India in 2023. The financial performance of fleet operators reflects this expansion, with companies like Lithium Urban Technologies and Everest Fleet reporting significant revenue growth in recent years.
